It was Tchaikovsky who first railed against the prevalent use of the dominant 7th chord in certain common harmonizations of Russian chant. Since then, composers and arrangers have been seeking ways of getting around the dominant 7th, offering alternative harmonizations that respect the modal beauty of the original melodies. This is one such harmonization.
